It comes equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, a particulate filter that is 90% efficient, a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), and uses a newly designed, higher-pressure Bosch (Electronically Controlled) direct injection system. It has an engine displacement that is 12% greater than its predecessor. This new engine’s specs meet the 2010 EPA standards, three full years ahead of governmental requirements, and are designed to operate safely on B5 Biodiesel fuel.


    The 6.7 liter engine uses a cast-iron block and heads, and is an inline
    six cylinder configuration, with over-head valves (OHV). It provides
    4-valves per cylinder, and uses a solid lifter camshaft. Its approximate
    dry weight is 1,050 lbs., and has a 12-quart oil capacity. The 6.7
    liter engine also uses a turbocharger and is capable of attaining 350
    horsepower @ 3,013 rpm. Surprisingly, the automatic transmission
    variants produce greater output torque, 800 ft-lbs. @ 1,600 rpm, than
    the manual transmission versions (610 ft-lbs. @ 1,500 rpm).

    Emission
    enhancements make this the cleanest burning Cummins engine built. There
    are three main technologies responsible for emission reduction. The
    first is a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), which collects nearly 90% of
    the particulates generated by the engine. The filter is located in the
    exhaust stream and catches particulates (soot) before the exhaust enters
    the muffler.

    The second technology is Exhaust Aftertreatment.
    This is essentially a cleaning step designed to make the diesel
    particulate filter (DPF) work efficiently. As the DPF becomes clogged, a
    computer sensor detects the reduction in exhaust flow and alters the
    fuel injection cycle. A small amount of fuel is injected during the
    engine’s exhaust stroke, allowing diesel fuel to enter the DPF. The
    engine’s idle is increased to generate heat in the DPF, which causes the
    fuel to burn, along with particulates. The last technology used is
    exhaust gas recirculation, which is used to reduce the amounts of NOx in
    the diesel’s exhaust.

    The engine is quiet, and presents no
    noticeable throttle lag. The size of the vehicle along with its options,
    type of transmission, tire inflation, and driving habits all have an
    effect on fuel consumption. Most vehicles incorporating this Cummins
    engine have a fuel tank capacity of approximately 50 gallons. However,
    according to federal fuel economy regulations for 2011, you can expect
    anywhere from 9 to 20 miles per gallon.
