America needs a new Ramcharger

1983 Dodge Ramcharger.jpgWhile the new Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee are among the most popular sport utility vehicles in the American automotive market, those modern large SUVs are a far cry from the rugged Dodge Ramchargers of the 1970s, 80s and 90s - leaving a need for a big, tough SUV.  Back in the day, the most popular SUVs were models like the Dodge Ramcharger, the Plymouth Trail Duster, the Chevrolet K5 Blazer and the full sized Ford Bronco.

These were big, roomy utes powered by large V8 engines that could seat at least four adults, offer space for tons of cargo, tow a heavy trailer and storm through the woods in stock form.  While the modern SUV can do just about anything that a 1983 Ramcharger could (plus packing more power, more efficiency and more gadgets), today's full size SUVs have gotten to be so expensive that most average owners shudder at the thought of driving in icy weather for the fear of damaging one of the plastic exterior body panels.

DSC_0013.JPGEach summer, Chrysler Group plants around North American take a couple weeks off so that they can re-tool the facilities for the upcoming model year while also allowing the dealerships to sell off existing models sitting on lots but due to strong sales through the first four months of 2012 - several Chrysler Group plants will stay open through their scheduled downtime.

First and foremost, the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit and the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois will both completely skip their scheduled two week summer downtime.  Jefferson North builds the Dodge Durango and the Jeep Grand Cherokee while Belvidere currently builds the awesome new Dodge Dart alongside the Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot.  The strong sales of the Durango, Grand Cherokee, Patriot and Compass require these two plants to stay open all summer - bolstered by the start of production of the new Dart.  Also, the Toluca Car Assembly Plant in Mexico will skip their summer downtime.  Toluca produces the Dodge Journey (and the Fiat Freemont) along with the compact Fiat 500.

DG012_015DU.jpgThe Chrysler Group has just announced a new member of their police department offerings with the Dodge Durango Special Service, which joins the Dodge Charger Pursuit and the Ram 1500 Special Service pickup.  With three models, the Chrysler Group offers the broadest collection of special service vehicles and thanks to the efforts of the 3.6L Pentastar V6 and the 5.7L Hemi V8 - these police package models are among the most efficient and most powerful in the segment.

The Dodge Durango Special Service models include the same engine lineup as those sold to the public, beginning with the 290 horsepower Pentastar V6 and topping out with the 360 horsepower Hemi V8.  Whether fitted with the V6 or V8 option, the Durango fire and police vehicles will receive a heavy-duty braking package, a high output 220-amp alternator recharging a heavy duty battery, a high volume water pump and an engine oil cooler.  These features help to deal with the odd driving cycles of a police or fire department vehicle with the electrical system improvements help to accommodate the added strain of the interior and exterior electrical gadgetry.

caliber mainstreet screenshot.jpgOne aspect of the 2012 model year vehicles from the Dodge brand was that the stupid trimlines introduced for the 2011 model year were almost completely eliminated.  While the Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger stuck to the more traditional trimlines like SE, SXT, R/T and SRT (plus the Rallye trimline here and there), the Avenger, Caliber, Durango, Journey and Grand Caravan went away from the familiar trimlines to make room for "jazzy" new trimlines names.

Yee-Haw! 2012 Dodge Durango Named "Full-Size SUV of Texas"

2012-Durango-front.jpgNearly 60 journalists belonging to the Texas Automotive Writers Association (TAWA) spent two days driving the industry's newest sport-utility and crossover vehicles in San Antonio late last week, and when the dust settled, the new Dodge Durango stood proud as the winner of the prestigious "Full-Size SUV of Texas" honor.

New Dodge Durango Named Top Safety Pick by IIHS

2011-dodge-durango.jpgDodge Durango has been named a "Top Safety Pick" for 2011 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS recognizes vehicles that perform "good" in front, side, rollover and rear crash test evaluations performed at its Vehicle Research Center in Virginia. This award applies to Durango models built after May 2011.

2012 Dodge Durango Rumored to get SRT8 Package

by Patrick Rall

When the 2011 Dodge Durango was introduced during the 2010 calendar year, it ushered in a whole new design and structural theme from the previous Durango SUVs, and while no huge changes are expected for 2012, there is one very popular rumor that has been prevalent since the sporty new SUV debuted last year - an SRT variant.

2011 Dodge Durango: An Overview

durango.jpgBy G.R. Whale

The 2011 Dodge Durango is substantially overhauled from previous iterations, keeping only its name, optional Hemi engine and perhaps a couple of hidden electronic pieces. It's a big change, likely to win its share of "most improved" awards.

2012 Dodge Magnum drawings?

2012 1.jpg

There have been rumors floating around for a while now that when Dodge brings back their Durango-sized sport utility vehicle for 2012 that it could be called the Dodge Magnum.  That name started on a sporty coupe in the 70's then moved on to the popular gangster style station wagon, so I guess that it wouldn't be all that odd for the name to receive yet another form.

This morning, a variety of sources have shown off drawings of what is expected to be that 2012 sport utility, with the pictures depicting sketches of the next SUV submitted to the US patent office.  The drawings give us a great look at this new Dodge SUV although there is little insight to the details of the 2012 Dodge SUV.  Thanks to Mr. M. for sending me the images from the USPTO.

One interesting feature is the large split-spoke wheels that look very similar to those found on the Dodge Ram SRT10.  Could these drawings portray the newest Dodge SRT model?  The Jeep SRT8 model with AWD and the 425hp 6.1L Hemi made a splash in the industry and could the sharp styling of the Dodge brand bring us another high performance SUV?

The full-sized Dodge Ramcharger, predecessor to the Dodge Durango, was introduced in the mid 1970's when the American automotive market was seeing a new kind of truck, though it was labeled a station wagon. They typically bore a pickup truck front end and chassis with a solid cap, and the interior was unlike the typical pickup with a cap in that these new "station wagons" had a second row of seats. This allowed people the seating and hauling capacities of a family station wagon, but with the abilities, both on and off-road, of a pickup truck. Models such as the Chevrolet Blazer (known by some as the K5), Ford Bronco, Plymouth Trail Duster, and Ramcharger represented this new class of "car" that quickly became very popular.1998 durango.jpg
