Muscle Car of the Week: 1971 Plymouth ‘Cuda 440+6

Though the Hemi ‘Cuda gets all the fame, the ‘Cuda 440+6 is just as good. The 440 engine made nearly all the same racket and shove of the Hemi 426, but at a much cheaper cost. This 440, the subject of the Muscle Car of the Week video below, is about as rare as they come for a number of reasons. For one, only 16 convertible 440s were made in 1971, and only five of them came with a manual transmission.

This one was unique in how the options were added, with power top, power windows, woodgrain center console, pistol-grip shifter, and leather bucket seats. Those are things you would rarely find on a 440, which generally were ordered with sparse equipment to make them cheap street racers. This one, however, breaks that mold.

Even with the rarity, the 440s aren’t crossing auction blocks with the same kind of elevated price tags as their 426 counterparts, but that doesn’t make them any less loved. The 440 ‘Cuda was a first muscle car for many, so sentimental value is through the roof. And those big V8s stay true to the mantra of “Mopar or no car.”
