Default 2004 dodge durango 4.7 Ticking Noise when started up

I bought the durango about 3 months ago it has 86000 miles on it. The noise just started out of nowere the other day. It makes a ticking noise right when i start it up. the noise will go away after about 5 minutes. The noise willl speed up if i hit the pedel if that helps any.

Thanks

Broken exhaust manifold studs are a fairly common thing on the 4.7's. When the manifold is cold, there isa gap between the manifold and head, causing the leak. Once the manifold heats up, it expands, and the leak closes. That is why it is typically heard only the first few minutes. Now, your ticking could be a few other things (I am assuming that oil level is OK) but I would check the studs. Do a search for it, someone posted some good pics in the past.

I am pretty sure it is probably your exahust manifold. I have had this problem forever. I took it to the dealer in 05 and they "fixed it". Yea right!!! what they actually did was drilled out the hole too far and it worked for a while but it starrted again. You can buy the gasket for about 13.00 at Adsvance auto or Auto Zone. You can fix it yourself it you are mechanically inclined. My husband fixed mine in about 3 or4 hours. It wasn't too bad to get to. I hope this helps.

+3 on a manifold issue. These are classic symptoms of loose or broken exhaust manifold bolts.
I have also heard of some folks having intake maifold bolts breaking as well.

TJB:

At 100k, your cooling system should be flushed and refilled w/ new anti-freeze. Also, if the tranny, T case, and front rear diffs have not been serviced, this is the time to do it.

FYI, the factory sparks plugs are only rated for 30k, so I would pull a plug or two and give em a look. If they are worn much beyond spec, replace em.

Most 2004+ 4.7s don't get the manifold bolt broken issue. Nearly none of the 2007+ 4.7s never do (redesigned)

4.7s do slap and tick a lot at start up. Run a good oil and see what happens right after the oil change. Also, run a quart of MMO or the like for an hour before the fluid swap.

When I first bought the D I may have been OK with a engine tick but I think their is something going on with possible the exhaust. It sounds to much like a hole in the muffler at start up.This wasn't the case 2 years ago it was smooth and quit. I plan to have mind check out. I will report what I finding.
