Please tell me, what oil would you recommend for a 2001, 4.7L, V8, SLT Dodge Dakota.

Thanks!

the most important thing about oil is to have lots of zinc in the oil. i have done some searching on the internet on oil, filters, additives. i like to have oil as thick as i can and it still start in cold. so here is what i use, 2001 dak v6. valoline premium blue 15w-40 oil. purolator pl14670 pure one filter, use only a pure one filter that is shown by the p in the part no. then you need to go to zddplus.com site and get some zinc from them. my truck starts ok in the winter, but we normaly dont get below 0 f.
i did have trouble with 20-50 not wanting to turn over in the winter.

The service manual says 6 quarts of oil for the 4.7L.
I, like Moe, use Purolator filters. (The PL14670 is what they say for the 4.7L as well, which is the same for my 3.9L, I use the PL30001 because its a physically larger filter)
I use Mobil 1 5W-30 in my 3.9L, and it likes it.

i run 3 quarts castrol GTX 10w-30 and a quart of lucas oil treatment in my 3.9 with a K&N filter... make sure you search for a filter with a low micron rating to get the best results

i personally think people make to much of a thing about oil. from my experiences with all different cars i dont think it matters much as long as you use name brand oils and filters and most importantlychange it regularly. it also depends on how you drive. lots of city stop and go traffic kills oil so if that is you, id just change it a little more often.

myself, i buy a name brand, valvoline, penzoil, quaker state...whatever is on sale at the time and always use 10-30 and change it about every 4000 miles. i usually buy purolater oil filters because they are quality at a lower price, but then again, whatever is on sale at the time. however, i did have a car that had almost 300,000 miles on it and noticed that the quaker state high milage oil worked wonders and would suggest that to anyone who has a vehicle that either smokes a little or burns some oil.

i have read that synthetics are a waste of money...todays engines are built sturdy enough that it is not necessary to use those. if one can get 250-300k miles or even moreout of an engine they are doing pretty well and i have done that with my regimen...

I've never worked on a Gen 2, so I don't know if it will fit. On the Gen 1's theres not exactly a ton of space between the end of the filter and the frame, but enough to get it on and off.

i use 5w-30 in winter and 10w-30 in summer and i use mobil 1 synthetic with a mobil one filter. as far as the newer engines are built better thats true but sythetics are built to withstand more heat and not break down as easy and for me just the knowing is enough to want to run them. imo its worth it to run them but thats just me. and for the switching brands all the time thats not a good idea from what i've heard each company has a few little difference in how they manufacture their oil and their oil is made to work right with those components and when changing companys and mixing them all the time just not a good idea imo but if it works for you why not. im by no stretch an expert on oil but from things i've heard from mechanics and read i feel its best to run sythetics or blends and stick with one brand.
