Default 02 4.7L oil pressure problem

the oil pressure started bouncing around the other day,(down to zero then back to normal) so i did an oil change seeing as how i was due for one anyways, oil, filter, air filter..... tha basics...... when i was done she ran/sounded great....... about 2 miles later the oil pressure dropped out again and within another few miles it started clickin and knockin pretty bad so i parked her. any thoughts would be appreciated. this is the worst time of year for any major problems, i hope its a quick fix i can do myself but its not smelling like it is. not sure if its an oil pump/sending unit or what.......or how muck this may cost..... help! __________________

I'm not a 100%, but with oil press dropping and then the fact that the motor is knocking. I'd lean towards the oil pump. I'd be a big project if you do it your self. I think you have to drop the tranny to get the oil pan off.

another member had the same problem. I would scroll through the posts for the last 10days or so and see if he updated it with the problem. Many were saying to check the pick-up tube and see if it had come loose/fell off or is clogged.
have you tried pouring a can of seafoam in with the oil to rule out clogging or sludging issues? You will have to run the engine, so that would be entirely up to you.

Since the tube it bolted to the bed plate in two places... and is a PITA to remove even after those bolts are removed I dont think the pickup could fall out... BUT it could very well be clogged up if the engine has built up sludge.

Either way, if its knocking... damage has been done.

Did you change the filter? A bad filter can cause these issue.

With the fluctuating oil pressure I would normally suggest you check the sending unit... but since its knocking at the same time then that rules out the sending unit.

You MAY be able to run some flush through it and then try adding FULL SYNTHETIC which is also a SLUDGE FIGHTER... run that for a short time and change it ... with FULL SYNTHETIC... If your LUCKY this will clear any/all sludge in the engine and will clear up the pump IF it is indeed SLUDGE causing the issue. Cross your fingers and hope the damage is minimal.

GOOD LUCK & please keep us posted.

I'd drop the pan and clean it out, cheap and easy insurance.

Why? You dont need a lift.... I just crawl under my truck and do it myself...

My bad... Your talking about pulling the pan... Yeah I can see that being a PITA...

Good luck and keep us posted.

Yeah, you will need to LIFT the engine to get the pan off... The OIL pick up is in the way and without lifting the engine you will not be able to get the pan off.
