Default Heater Core replacement project

To replace somthing so small.. this is what you have to do...

Drain A/C System
Drain Coolent
Drop Steering Wheel Column
Remove Gauge Cluster
Remove Main wire cluster
Remove Glove Box
Remove all screws from dash that hold it in place
Remove and mark all connections/grounds
Remove Seats/Center Console
Pull Whole Dash backwards
Remove Heatercore housing
Rip apart heater core hosuing it has about 20+ screws on it.
Replace the stupid thing.. and put it all back together.. its pathetic..

Im waiting to go get a A/C Disconnecter tool so i can pull the heater core housing out of the truck then ill be done and have to put it all back together.

here are some pics of the progress...

Did you take pics of the actual steps and where the screws are at and stuff? Has anyone done a DIY on this yet? And for the noob question of the day, what does the heater core actually do?

no i didn't take pics of every step.. you will have to get a Haynes manual or something, the list is outrageously long.

and the heater core gives you heat and defrost.

that is absolutely the most ridiculous thing i have ever seen. For all that work, I would just not have heat. In fact, my 88 blows out lukewarm air and I know it needs a heater core, but im not about to go thru all that.
thats just poor design

if its blowing warm air then that means you have a clogged hose not letting hot water in.

A busted heater core causes lots of Antifreeze to get EVERYWHERE, it was so bad it was pouring out my firewall, i almost over heated.

Thats why im replacing it, cuz if i drive it in the upper rpm like 4500+ it will leak fluid.. so i had to replace it.. and im not paying someone else to do it for 500-1000 dollars.. plus to i needed the experience on how to do this.

Cuz now i can do other peoples trucks and charge them 500$ lol

If my heat is hot with the blower setting at the lowest and cooler with the blower setting at the hightest, what would that be?

make sure you check the new heater core and make sure it doesnt leak!!!

I did it my self in the 99, it took a weekend just taking my time. it was a PITA. then I got it all together and it still leaked. I got a faulty heater core. so I said **** it and took it to the dealer. it was only $350 including a new heater core. so there was no way I was goin through all that hell for only $350. so I let them do it and I got a 1 year warranty.
