'08 Ram 5.7 Hemi vs '08 Ram 4.7
Hey folks,
I registered on this forum tonight to ask for some help in making a decision. Hope you don't mind.
I'm considering purchasing a new '08 Dodge. The dealer here has two '08 QC 4x4 trucks - one has the 5.7L Hemi and the other has the 4.7L. Other than that they are pretty much the same truck (same color, too). They have priced them both to me at the same price ($25,300). The Hemi truck has step bars, tube rails on the bed, and a chrome bug sheild. That's about the only other difference.
I occasionally pull a trailer load of wood, but for the most part this will be a daily driver. The 4.7 is rated on the sticker to avg 13-19mpg (up to 20) and the 5.7 is rated 14-20 (up to 23) - I think I'm remembering that right... but maybe not. I do know the Hemi had a higher expected mileage rating (up to 23) on the highway.
I think I understood that the Hemi has a design that allows it to run on 4 cyls on the highway, but admittedly don't know much about this. I assume that is where the extra mileage comes from. I don't think the 4.7 has this design.
Both trucks have 3.55 gears in the rear end.
Looking for any recommendations, suggestions, things to consider, whatever. Anything you can offer would be appreciated to help me make a decision.

I dont know of a 5.7L HEMI getting up 23mpg stock. I have seen the 4.7 do this. If you are mostly a DD i would get the 4.7 in that yea I believe the 4.7 (310 maybe?) has increased HP and TQ though not as much as the 5.7 its not too far away.plenty of power in the newer 4.7. the 4.7 will be a cheaper price tag too.

unless the 4.7 truck has the stick shift get the hemi.. the only benefit for the 4.7L other than that it really only has about 30 less hp is that it gives you the benefit to get a getrag 238 six speed manual. the manual tranny is bulletproof and can not be broken. while the 545rfe automatic that the hemi and 4.7 if auto are equipped with is IMO i know some think otherwise but to be real it sucks. Be glad it has a lifetime warranty because expect to replace the trans before 100k especially if you tow. other than the trans the trucks are bulletproof. but if they both auto take the extra power of the hemi. if you want a stick go with the 4.7 because the stick is more reliable and the power difference isn't that great. it's hardly anything when the 4.7 is paired to the stick seeing as the manual trans is more efficient than the automatic.

I agree. With both of them at the same price, you'd be a fool to go with the 4.7, especially with the extras the HEMI has. The mileage will not be that different - maybe 1 mpg and you'll be happy to have that HEMI. Besides, that engine is a $945 option over the 4.7L according to my sticker.

Too bad they have the 3:55 gears.
If they are the same price I would get the Hemi no doubt! You can never have too much power.
I have a handheld tuner and have the MDS disabled. That's the 4cyl mode. I actually get better mileage.
If you think your gonna get 23mpg out of a full size 4x4 pick-up truck, your sadly mistaken.
Lots of posts about mileage. AVERAGE for the 4.7 is 16mpg or so. AVERAGE for the Hemi is 14-15mpg or so. That's mixed driving.
I am getting 16mpg mixed with my programmer with the mds disabled with a tune fro the programmer using a 91octane tune. You will regret getting a 4.7l if the 5.7L was the same price!

that might be alittle steep of a price bc some 09's you get for a little bit more like 29k
