Default 46re Transmission Problems

I have a 97 Ram with a 5.9L and a 46re Auto Trans. After my transmission warms up it often likes to stay in 1st gear up to 4,000 rpms before it shifts and second gear also. Third gear, and Overdrive work great. Keep in mind it does not do this when I first take off........only after I drive for 10-15 minutes

Also the other night I pulled out to pass a car and when I kicked into 2nd gear it slipped and smacked the rev limiter and I let off real quick and it grabbed 2nd. It doesn't always slip that bad in 2nd....but before I assume the transmission needs rebuilt I would like some opinions.

1st gear sometimes up to 4,000 rpms,
2nd gear sometimes up to 4,000 rpms
Kick down into 2nd gear causes a slip enough to hit rev limiter
3rd gear good
OverDrive good.

Have you made sure your fluid level is correct, and the condition of the fluid is good?

I've got similiar problems on my 5.9L 4x2 46RE.

See my progress under "tranny will not upshift".

MonteC has been great at helping me diagnose the problem. Were not finished yet...but we are closing in.

On second thought, do these quick and easy things first.

1. Check Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
2. Check TV Cable
3. Check fluid (as mentioned earlier)
4. Check/adjust bands

All these checks are FREE, they just take a little time.

I don't think most trans errors actually throw CEL's, rather they just lay in the mist and wait for you to check if there are any codes.

Okay so if I hook up the Snap-On Modis to it, I can read the codes(if there are any). I would just hate to pull the tranny to find out it doesn't need rebuilt.

dbl is right. My tranny codes never popped up as CELs. Instead they laid dormant like a "bad virus" waiting for me to check the ODBII port.

Okay I'll get them read.............also I read that a TPS can't cause a Slip in the Tranny..........what else could cause a slip other than bad clutches and steels in the tranny
