Question transfer case problems on a 99

iv got a 99 ram 4x4
and it take a couple of minutes to get it in 4 wheel drive
it feels like it goes in but does not
but after going from 2h to 4h a few times it goes in
then pops out at road speed
anyone have this issues before?
i am hoping its just linkage , but thinking the worst
like a whole new transfer case...im afraid to ask how much that would run

iv got a new 09 ram, but i want to keep the 99 for a plow truck

thanks for any info

Is the shift **** popping out or the axles popping out?

i had a problem with my transfer case in my '95. i ended up buying a used one from a good dealer and me and my buddy swapped it out in about 6 hours. i think the case cost $495 from what i remember.

transfer cases are really simple to work on. you have a new truck, so if the fix isnt obvious on the outside, dont be afraid to rip into it, it could be a simple thing, like a shift fork or a dog ring... if it is its a cheap fix, if it isnt... you were gonna buy a new one anyway. gl

Maybe its just because I am a semi-pro at removing my trans (3 times in 2 months) but I don't think it takes that long to swap a transfer case. All you have to do is disconnect the axles (4 u-joint bolts on the rear and 4 bolts on the front), the linkage (1 bolt), the vacuum lines, and disconnect it from the trans (7? bolts).

The only catch is that you have to raise the trans up off of the crossmember to get to the trans-transfer case bolts. But that is only a couple more bolts.

Check and make sure you are getting the correct vacuum to the shift motor on the front axle under load. One hose will have about 15lbs in 2wd , and the other one will have the same when in 4wd. If those check out, use a vacuum pump to test the shift motor itself to see if it holds vacuum.
