Default Oil Dip Stick

Being a new Dodge truck owner, I have noticed that when I get oil changes, and the vehicle calls for 5 quarts (including filter) that when 5 quarts are put in, the oil reads waaay past the full mark on the dip stick, and reads about 3/4 of a quart high on the stick. The oil goes past " Do Not Overfill, and stops at the "O" on "See Owners Manual" printed on the dip stick which is way WAY past the full mark.

The dip stick is very long when I pull it out and I assume that it is the correct one. What is the story with the Dodge oil dip sticks reading high on oil changes? Or is it just me. Thanks!

I put 6 in mine and it was ok. You also need to let the oil settle a bit as well that might help a bit.

I check the oil once a month and after it sets overnight, and it always reads high and I have had multiple oil changes, same thing. I might take the stick into the dealer since it has numbers on it, to make sure that I have the correct dip stick in it.

On my Explorer's dip stick, 5 quarts is right on the full mark. So something is not right with my Dodge, if you guys when you do oil changes that your dip sticks are at the full mark and not way past it.

I use the larger filter on mine and it takes 5 1/2 to the full line.

It sounds to me like you may have the wrong dipstick. I have done a zillion oil changes on my truck (OK, at least 50 anyway) and it is always at the perfect level on the dipstick when I add 5 quarts. If you want I will measure the dipstick in my truck for you (2000 5.9) to confirm the length and the area of the correct fill line.

Edit: I took the initiative and went and measured it. It is (from bumping the blunt end of the handle that touches the tube) 32 1/2" - 33 7/8" in the "safe" area and 36" in total length.

Do you wipe the dipstick off first, put it back in and then pull it out to get the reading?

Yep, I wipe it off and then stick it back in and check. On my next day off, I am going to take the dip stick into the dealer and have them look up the numbers printed on the dip stick to find out what exactly is going on and if I have the correct dip stick, which by the way it's reading, I'm sure I don't! This is strange, as it has the yellow top as other Dodge trucks that I see. Maybe I have V6 dip stick?? But I know that when the oil is on the letter "O" for Owners Manual, it's full.

I changed mine a few weeks ago and put 5 liters in it, and it put it about a quarter inch or so above the full mark
