Default remove muffler and use resonator?

Just a quick question. I haerd of people removing the resonator on the Hemi and just running through the muffler. Has any one tried removing the muffler and replacing it with a straight pipe? If so how does it sound? Any performance gains? Etc.

I can't believe nobody has tried this. You would remove the little resonator and leave a big muffler but not the other way around? Someone help, or do I have to be the first to try it?

I think there was a post about this the other day. I have an '03 so I didn't have to worry about the resonator but I believe the suggestion was to have your local muffler shop remove the resonator and just weld regular piping back in its place. But if you're going to go this route, and you have the money, you might as well buy a cat-back exhaust and your problem is solved.

You got it wrong, Remove the muffler and put a pipe in it's place is what I am talking about. Cost about 25 dollars cat-back cost about $500. I don't see how the cat-back is the way to go.

As far as sound, that would be loud as hell[sm=badbadbad.gif]. I have the 4.7 and my tips are my mufflers with my catback. Before i put the tips on I fired up the engine...loud as hell...cant imagine how that would sound on a hemi. i set off car alarms as it is. you'll probably get the same performance gains as you would spending $500 on a catback, so if you like it loud go for it. and if you dont like it, you only spent 25-30 bucks on a piece of pipe.

I considered it at one point, but read too many stories about people loosing some bottom end power when putting such a free flowing set-up on the truck.

I believe Mopartodd is correct - you will need some back pressure or risk losing quite a bit of bottom end.

I have a friend with an 03 and he removed his muffler and straight piped it. I was exteamly LOUD. At certain rpm's it would crackle. Hd removed the straight pipe and put in a flomaster 50 series. Sounds awesome now.

Heard this today. I was told if you lose bottom end performance you need to disconect the neg. battery cable for a couple hours. The computer will forget everything, and when you conect the cable and start the computer will readjust itself to run properly with no backpressure. Has any one else hear this?
