Way too many variables here. First off, the reciever or module is usually under the dashboard. Most professional installers will take parts of the dash out to conceal it, so just looking may not show it. Second, to determine what is wrong with it, we would need to know what kind we're dealing with, if your car had power locks origionally, or if actuators were installed, which fuses it's taped (might even be in-line fuses) into can vary widely depending on the installer and their practice. If you can get a picture or at least the numbers from the back of the remotes you have (maybe batteries in both have died?) we can probably help find out what you're dealing with.
