We just received our 2.2L OHC engine back from a local engine rebuilder and we can't detemine if the ignition timing is set right. The Haynes manual is a bit short in the area, and we can not fine the marks that are supposed to be on the the distributor body. Would like get it "right" before we stick the engine back in the truck... Distributor / ignition is electronic. Thanks in advance for any help, will be greatly appreciated.

 

I believe the engine is a 2.5. And you can check the FAQ in this section for online service manuals. They will have all the details you need.

 

Hey Crazy, thanks for the lead! I am a newbie to this site and wasn't aware there were on-line manuals. This engine really is a 2.2L. Dodge only put them in Dakotas for about a year and a half. Engine is very similar to the engines in many Dodge and Chrysler 4 cyl front wheel drive models but with amazingly few interchangeble parts.

Im just curious but why would you want to put the 2.2 back in, unless you want more gas milage than power, instead of another 6 or small V8, id rather go with a V8 personaly with more power

 

Hey Zack, good question. Answer: this is a restoration project with son #4, who is 15 and serious about a career in automotive. We own 3 additional Dakotas in various states of disrepair. We bought them for parts for the 1987, and one of them, a 1991, turned out to be really cherry! (3.9 v6 with auto, paid $400 for it just for parts, found out that everything works except the AC, and it runs really sweet!). So the 2.2l is our son Sam's first foray into overhead cam engines, and yes, the old man (me) will drive it and hopefully get 30+mpg. Junior is getting the v6, headers, better cam, etc... oh to be young again... (I start collecting social security next month)

 

Hey guys, I haven't been able to find an on-line manual for this 1987 Dakota. can one of you send me a link? I'm new to Dakotas (have owned 3 fullsize 1970s-1980s Dodge PUs and 14 Ford F100-150-250s... oops, sorry I said the last part)

 

What are you sayin sorry for, i dont think anyone should be offended, and dont you have an owners manual, or does that not have enouph of the info your looking for, anyways ill tell you that i dont have an online one and i wouldnt know where to find one though id rather find a free online haynes manual that tells you how to diagnose or what to hear or look for with problems and how to fix them
