Default 4X4 won't disengage 2004 Dakota

Shifts from high to low 4X4 but not back to 2WD, although switch indicator light says 2WD. Haven't used 4X4 in couple years - wife's been driving - complained about brakes/steering - somehow 4x4 got engaged, but switch was back in 2WD when I got to it - tried rocking back/forth drive/reverse, drove in reverse long distance, drove it pretty hard in both 4x4 modes and 2WD position - forward and reverse - still stuck ???

I know my '03 won't come out of 4Lo unless you put in neutral first.

I had a similar problem with my 2004 Dakota where it seemed to be "stuck" in 4WD and I had to keep moving the switch from 2WD to 4WD to convince it to switch back , but after two or three tries it switched back just fine. Not really sure why it did it though

Thanks - I tried EVERYTHING - Have it narrowed down to probably the transfer case motor, since I can hear the motor rotating into 4Low and back to High, but only clicks once from 4High to 2WD...

ANSWER: Front brake pad and rotor shot - metal to metal - locked up 4wd on its own and wouldn't disengage - problem fixed
