Default steering column noise

I'm getting some aggravating noise from the steering column of my wife's Caravan. Turning the wheel in either direction causes the noise, apparently from within the interior. It sounds like unlubricated pieces of plastic being rubbed together. The noise began after a local shop tried to find a cause for a suspension noise , which I later determined was cause by the sway bar bushings (described in another thread).

Anyway, the shop removed part of the dash and possibly loosened something in the steering column while looking for the previous problem. I thinking maybe some nuts were over-tightened while putting it back together.

Anyone else know of this kind of problem/noise? I know I should have taken the vehicle back to the shop, I'm angry that I didn't. We've been living with the noise for over a year now.
