Default Transfer case question...

Ok so i'm looking to trade for a 1998 Durango....

The guy says he took the front driveshaft out because there was a constant squeeking noise... After he took it out the noise quit...

He told me that the "chain" in the transfer case was probably loose, and it could be simply tightened up and i could put the driveshaft back on and everything would be a-ok...

now i have no idea what i'm doing with a transfer case... i've swapped transmissions and engines etc. but i have never torn a transfer case apart... my grandfather is a vehicle "guru" lol, and i know a few people that are mechanics and i could probably get them to look at it and fix it, but i do not own this durango yet, so i figured i'd ask on here...

so i'll give a thanks ahead and if anyone has had this problem, or would know what was goin on here, i would greatly appreciate your wisdom...

Loose chains need to be replaced. There is no adjustment! With that said, what has the owner done with the hole left in the differential of the D while the half shaft was removed?

thats what i was thinking... i coulnd't picture there being a "tensioner" in there lol... he left the yolk in the transfer case and i'm assuming in the front end...

i have priced the chains at a dealership and its too much for me to fix and i'd have to pay someone to do it because i wouldn't know what i was doing.. and with the idling problem the durango its hard telling what that could be so i'm not gonna trade him... i've got over 4 grand in my mustang alone and i think i'd be screwing myself in this deal..

but thanks for giving me some input i really appreciate it

the squeak was probably coming from the u-joints/cv-joint? in the drive shaft.
the guys a liar, or doesn't know his *** from a hole in the ground. as said, there's no adjustment on the chain, and chains don't squeak, they rattle.

never believe a prev owner when they say... all you gotta do is...
if it was so easy, why didn't they already fix it. lol.
