with Dana 44, 1/4 inch (6mm);

with 7.25 inch ring gear, 1/2 inch (12mm);
with 8.25 inch ring gear, 1/4 inch (6mm);
W/ 9.25 inch ring gear, 5/8 inch (15mm);
With Dana, 3/4 inch (17mm).

Yeah, use ATF+4.
And the reason for that is, if the seal(s) between the transmission and transfer case start to leak, the transmission fluid wouldnt become contaminated with a different fluid.
Change the Transfer Case fluid every time you change the Transmission fluid.
