Default Torque Converter LockUp Question

We have a 1992 Dakota 4x4, 318 v-8, Automatic. We are wondering if the torque converter lockup switch is the same thing as the overdrive sensor. If not, then where is the lockup switch located on truck?

No it is not the same thing.
The computer controls when the torque converter lockup. It only gets activated in 3rd gear and up.

There is no such thing as a overdrive sensor. The overdrive is also activated by the computer.

In my experience the torque converter only locks up in overdrive. It has never locked up on me in 3rd gear. Its easy to tell when it locks cause the rpms fall by several hundered. It can get annoying between 40 and 50 mph cause it drops the rpms down to around 1100, where the engine has no power. If I'm on roads with a speed limit off 45 I usually kick it out of overdrive so that it won't lock up.

The torque converter will lock up in O/D, and will also lock up in 3rd when O/D is shut off.

Like I said before, I have never witnessed it lock up in third. It's a computer controlled device just like overdrive. The '95 and lower trucks had hydraulic controlled transmissions with electronic overdrive. The computer only knows to lock the torque converter when it knows its in overdrive.

Accully I found it. It is 3rd gear at speeds above 25mph and 4th speeds above 50mph. It took me a bit but I found it. The repair manual says it on page 3. http://www.scribd.com/doc/228727/Dod...Service-Manual
