Default Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner

I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota 5.2L V8. I was wondering does anybody know where I can get a Dual snorkel air cleaner like the ones off of the older muscle cars. Preferably one that fits just right. Thanks.

A dual snorkel? I have seen a Dakota with a snorkel intake on it, like from a land rover, but I don't know what a dual snorkel air cleaner is from a muscle car or how you would hook one up to a first gen Dakota. You mean a cold air intake? K&N makes a round air filter for the first gens but doesn't offer the cone as stock.

You may want to clarify some. What I think of when I hear snorkel intake is not something I've ever seen nor would expect to see on a muscle car so I think you and I have different ideas of what a snorkel intake is.

I googled it and it looks to basically be a standard air cleaner with 2 intake hoses running to it. So in theory I don't think it is a snorkel like we think of on a truck, but the terminology is out there on google I guess.

I always thought that the throttle body was somewhat of a limiting factor as well as the filters we use.

dbilik is right... yotaco_22 has the terminology correct, these are what are referred to as "dual snorkle air cleaners"...



But, in the truck world, when we hear the word snorkle, we think of the type of air intake that lets you submerge your truck in water or mud without worrying about sucking it into the intake...



But I also agree with dbilik on the fact that you won't get any more airflow than with the K&N open filter, so the limiting factor is the throttle body...

95_318SLT has the right picture with the orange air cleaner. its not really a snorkel but it is what they are referred to if you look them up on the internet. I would think with the open air filter from K&N would suck in hot air, so im not to enthused about them . The late 80s shelby Dakota 5.2L come with a dual "snorkel" air cleaner but I live in an area with three junkyards with no Dakotas. Does anyone know where I could order one.

I agree with the K&N sucking in hot air. Check out what K&N offers on the 97 and later Dakotas. It is a cone filter that hooks up as a cold air intake, now if you could hook one of those up to a first gen you would definately get some benefits from getting colder air to your intake. I have never seen one hooked up to a first gen but I don't see why it couldn't be done. Maybe a little modification to the front end to route the air to the filter. You would have to order a second gen kit setup though.

No clue where to order a dual snorkel from a Dakota, I would say eBay is the best bet.

I would say that you are assuming that the air is not heated up as it goes through the ducting and into the intake. Our factory air intake ducting/air cleaner is too thin to insulate the incoming air from the heat under the hood. Also, those large diameter metal intake housings are great air heaters. Have you ever felt how hot they get? With a real cold air intake, the tubing is much thicker and better insulated to keep the air cool as it goes past the headers and such. Also, the air is filtered in the front of the system and ducted straight into the throttle body whereas ours is ducted into the filter which like I said before, is like a big heater.

Those K&N filters, when complimented by functional hood scoops, will be the best possible option aside from setting up your intake with a second gen dakota cold air system.

What the hell are the things on the intake with rubber hoses coming from and when i make my own am i going to have that on the other one to or what
