Default Need info on a 1994 Dodge Dakota 4x4 transfer case

I need infor on a 1994 Dodge Dakota 4x4 long bed with a 231 transfer case. The truck belongs to my brother in law. We have been trying to find a transfer case for it with no luck. We were wondering what other Dodge or Jeep 4x4 transfer case would work. Would a transfer case from a full size 1993 Dodge Ram 1500 work. The tag on the transfer case say's it's a 231 HD transfer case. I have done some reseach on the transfer cases on the internet. I have found out that a 231 DHD will not work. The 231 transfer case in the Jeep's would not work because the tail shaft is to short and the shifting pattern or linlage is backwards. I have heard that the 231 also came in the Chevrolet S10 Blazer's about the same year, but not really sure. Any help by anyone would be greatful. We would like to be able to find a transfer case some where close to home instead of having to go about 100 miles from home.

Is it the 231D or the 231D-HD? The D stands for Dodge, meaning it was built with the Dodge specs, as compared to the J, that was built with the Jeep's specs. The HD means Heavy Duty. I wasn't aware that they ever put the 231D-HD on these trucks from the factory. Anyway, the '93 Ram 1500 231D will work. The Ram 2500 and 3500 used the 241D-HD. If you want to see the complete list, here is a good site:

As for the 231J not working, it will work if you put your shift plate (and possibly guide rail) on/in it. The problem with the 231J is that it might have a narrow chain and be slightly lighter duty if it came off a 4.0L or smaller engine, but if you have a 3.9L in that Dakota instead of a 5.2, that shouldn't be a problem.
