Anyone know what the rattling noise coming from my 3.9 is.....everyone i have ever seen makes the same noise. Im told its the timing chain rattling.... Otherwise my truck runs great at 157k I like driving it more than my 04 ram LOL

 

the engine noise is likly the timing chain ratteling
you can buy a new chain and tensioner at the dodge dealer near you
the tensioner is an update
it will keep the chain tight and will take care of that rattle

 

I just pulled apart a 3.9 and it already had a tensoner, I don't have any idea what year dak it was out of.....
I'm dropin' it in a 96 because the old one had a nasty bottom end...lol

I've had the same problem for a while. I replaced the timing chain with the new Dodge tensioner and the whole time I was replacing it I was giggling like a school girl. I just KNEW that I had the noise and problem fixed. Well.......I got the truck put back together and guess what...yep, click, click, click down the road. Next I tore the engine down and replaced all of the lifters. That did eliminate some noise, but the main noise that I was hearing...the loud rattle...was a connecting rod knock. I'll never forget that knock. I won't let that happen to me again.

 

I have met at least 4 others with the 3.9 (one in a van with about 70k on it) and everyone made the same noise....sometimes it doesn't make the noise....It has 160k on it so i may do the timing chain just for the heck of it in the fall.....

 

Yeah does it sound like it comin from around the harmonic balencer b/c mine does the same thing and it sound very annoying.

 

I think mine makes the same noise. I can here it coming from 100 yards away. It still runs great after 170,00 miles. Just keep changing the oil.

Funny..If it sits for a while as mine often does its real quiet at first then it comes back. I really think its the chain
