Default Shift lever has spongy feel - 92 dakota

1992 Dodge Dakota, v6, Sport, 3.9, 5 speed manual, 2x4 (RWD), 134k.

I need some assistance please.

Yesterday, while shifting, the gear stick, at times, got a very spongy feel to it when shifting. Not the clutch. The shifter. It was hard to shift and get it into gear. I am researching my factory service manual, and around on the web. Looks like it might a bushing or maybe something called the shift arm in the tower?

1) Could someone confirm this?
2) Is this something I can do myself - taking the boot off etc. from inside the cab, or will I need to have the transmission pulled?

Thank you for any help with this.

It looks like I can get take the boot off from (inside the cab) and get at the bushing from that way but my Haynes manual says 1992 and newer stick is removed by dropping the tranny and cannot be serviced from inside the cab. Can someone please confirm or deny this?
