Default Rear Drive Shaft Sizing/Compatibility? - Junk Yard Pull

I tried searching around the forum, and looking through the FAQs but I couldn't find any info, so I'm creating a new thread.

I have a 92 4x4 3.9l extended cab that I need a new rear drive shaft for. Somehow the U-joint in the back went bad and destroyed itself and the rear yoke in the drive shaft. Luckily I was going slow when the whole shaft fell out!! I'm wondering what other years/types of dakotas will have shafts that will work for my truck. Going to look for one in the junk yard in a day or two.

My questions are:
  1. What range of years? Newer dakotas too?
  2. Are V8 shafts different? Do I need a shaft from a V6?
  3. Will a shaft from a 2WD truck work for my 4x4?
I already know I need a shaft from an extended cab.

Thanks in advance for the info!! Really appreciated.

Have you taken it to a driveshaft shop to see how much it would cost to have it repaired? It might not be that expensive.

Yes, I've phoned around and was quoted $300 for a repair. The wrecking yard only wants $38 for a shaft.

Thanks rx7!

Did you hurt the slip yoke? FWIW I had a driveshaft built for a corvette I have. They only re used the front slip yoke. New joints, shaft, labor, everything was a little under $200.00
All that being said, if you get the used one, I would still put new joints in it. 20+ year old joints should be replaced. If you break the front joint, its a whole different ball game.......

The slip yoke seems to be fine , at least to the extent that I can see after a quick glance. I know it's important that there are no scratches or dings on it.

And of course, I already have two new joints ordered

U joints are fairly easy to replace... Buy one from a bone yard and replace the joints I'll be fine

I'd love to, but I'm having quite a bit of trouble finding a shaft... I've searched pretty much all the major wrecking yards in Calgary with no success. No luck finding parts trucks on classifieds either. I'm running out of options here so it's looking more and more like I'm gonna be dishing out the $300 for a repair.
