98 durango rear end

98 durango rear end
I have a 98 durango slt 4x4 with 103,000 miles. It has been making a strange noise from the rear axle and I do know the rear pinion bearings are shot. The shop wants anywhere from $400-$500 for the repair. My question is... I can get a good deal on a 2000-2002 brand new rear end complete with out the axles. Same gears as mine 3.92 12 bolt with the hexagon diff cover. Will this work for my 98 or do the 2000-2002's have a different rear end. The part number for the new one is 05015976AA. If this one will work I could do the install myself and be miles ahead with a brand new rear end. Also do all 3.92 rear ends have 9.25 axles? I couldn't find where it showed that on the rear axle just the 3.92. Thanks for the help

I think you will be good to go if this is the way you want to make the repair.
I am not 100% sure, but 00-02 rear ends are interchangeable so the 98-99s ought to be the same.
One thing is for sure. The long you wait, the worse the damage will be. At least to the oem unit.
There is another rear end thread here for a 2002 Durango. Take a look at the pics, and see what can happen when you drive on bad bearings.
