Shelby was/is Lee Iacoocca's friend and followed him. Lee Iacocca is the father of the Mustang (along with a few others who do not get credit) and thus the Shelby Cobra Mustang. Lee Iacocca moved to dodge and Shelby followed. I had a Shelby Daytona CS (1990) the last year made, 1 of 5 made and delivered in my district with a manual trans. Boy that car was fast all heck, opened the waste gate up and she would just scream. The only real issue with that car was the knuckle cups they used on the half shafts. car had so much power it would eventually strip the cup and half shaft. Tranny was not the best as well but was okay, blew one of them out. Engine was great and man oh man did i abuse that car...
Anyways, ya hydra I knew about the Shelby Durango.. I would luv to have one myself but probably would have to sell the house to get one.

Shelby Daytona's were quick little cars, they gave the Cavalier Z24 a run for there money....
I had a Dodge Shadow ES, 2.2L Turbo with the ES package, 5 speed. Nice little car, the only mechanical difference between a Shelby and ES was the intercooler. The 4 poppers couldnt keep pace with a stock Mustang (5.0) or a Firebird/Camaro of the same year though.

Dunno if you ever road in a 1990 Daytona Shelby CS, like i said that was the last year they made them and put a little extra into them that year. even the 1989's could not run with them, had the intercooler 3 if i was not mistaken that the 89's did not have.
Only car I could not keep up with would be the 300 ZX twin turbo. That was about the baddest car (whiten reason) on the road in 1990, stock.
Mustang/Camaro was no problem to run with.

Here's about the last 3 and a half years of Shelby Durango tracking. Everything you want to know about the Shelby D is within this thread. As you get through a few pages, you get to more and more data. It then developed into a full tracking of all known Shelby Ds we can find:

In February of this year, based on my thread and compiled Shelby knowledge, I personally was contacted by an independent buyer in Canada to verify the legitimacy of one particular Shelby... Shelby D #0001! She happens to be the one in your photo about HS! How about that!! She was modded a bit for SEMA but she's the same D. I felt honored to be contacted to help. That D was last known to be in Beverly Hills, California, USA. with 29,644k miles and For Sale via Private Sale for $40,000.

The 5 liter Mustang was king of the stock world for a domestic car in the late 80's and early 90's. That pains me to say that being a Dodge/GM guy but it's true.
Out of the box, nothing can touch the 5 speed, 302 Ford had in the light Mustang. Now if you start playing arounbd with exhaust and fuel delivery systems then things change...
I would much rather have the Daytona, please do not get me wrong here. To make a 2 liter crank out and compete with a Stang, Camaro or even a 300ZX is very impressive and really makes the owner of the vehicle question why in the hell they bought what they did!
Back to this Durango, I am not sure if I like it or not. Then again I have not driven it or even witnessed the real truck in person. I would say get the package and then swap out the Magnum 360 for V10 engine and 6 speed transmission and call it a day!
