That is from a "recommended" 15,000 mile BMW interval with factory oil changes.
Not a good idea.

and bmw doesnt have a recomended change interval anymore they let the computer built into the car tell them when its time to change (my mom has an 08 x5 and with 25k on it in about 2 years it has only been changed once and it was at like 18 or 19k) and btw the dealer will not change it earlier than that (it came with 4 years of "free" maintance and repair work) and they went out of their way to make it hard for you to change yourself so we will eventually have to figure it out but until then its on them if something blows up
Exactly. THAT engine was opened up RIGHT AFTER the last green bar indicating it was time to change the oil again came on. If she is running 18 or 19,000 miles on her oil, it's probably already toast.
Any change at 15k is engine-suicide. They recommend that because they sell NEW cars.

bmw does require fully synthetic oil, but i still dont trust their obscenely long change interval. Tho since its not my car i am not going to argue the point with my parents about it and let them blow it up and deal with it on their own, i make sure mine gets done at 5k mile intervals religiously
BMW requires lubricant that exceeds US standards and is only available to "non US" so I understand your pain Sharp. But the fact is that the oil used in these motors have the same modifiers and additives that do break down so it still should be changed at at least 7500.
The thing you have to look at is what the OEM states and the lubricant company states and hope someone knows what they are talking about!
PS...... I think their both up in the night as per my post.

Not all are the same like the use of Mobil 1 SuperSyn European Car Formula 0W-40 and others only approved for European cars including BMW and Mercedes. They are different but there are ways around it. They have been around for a while maybe....... hmmmmm....... 2000?
Heres just a lil info but it gets larger as you look. Some of these lubricants are VERY hard to get.
What I meant was it was just a Mobil1 blend, nothing exotic and unavailable. We can buy 0W here with no problems. I can see how it can be tougher to get elsewhere. Of course we don't run that weight in the D. Mine drinks 10W30 only.
