Default Gas gauge shows "Full" all the time

1998 Durango. Today we filled the tank - actually I topped it off. Then drove about 150+ miles and the gas gauge didn't move, it showed Full. When we stopped again I added about 10 gallons, or half a tank of gas. Could topping off the tank have caused a problem with the sender unit - I hope not but...
I'm thinking perhaps a broken/ loose wire might cause this behavior? I'd really appreciate some tips on how to troubleshoot this problem, so would my friend, it's his car.

Thanks again.

Tony

I dont have any lit./time right now to run through some tests but i doubt filling with gas caused the issue Here are some snaps of the fuel pump to give ya a lil insight on the actuall level register/float

Wouldn't a loose wire send an "empty" signal to the gauge? I'm with Duranged, it could very well be the fuel pump's float. Time to drain the gas, drop the tank and change the pump. JMHO.

The only way to check the harness is to drop the tank. So if your dropping the tank then just replace the pump and be done with it. Consitering the sending unit, pump, filters, and regulators are all one unit........Like Nike says....Just do it!

Dropping the tank and replacing the pump can be a hassle just for a fuel gauge, esp pricey giving the fuel pump and possible strap replacement, although if it is stock it would be a good prevention on a high miles vehicle. Anyone perhaps have specs on the float voltages? you wouldnt be able to test at the pump due to the space/ locking tab unless dropping but lets make sure its not his gauge first.

Limited space @ tank
3" bdy would be the only way to get in their to test at the tank

Ya Hydra I bet he did. I had to do this myself on a transam. In order to replace the fuel pump in one of those you have to drop the axle, I said to heck with all of that and pulled out the dremel tool out, lifted the carpet and cut a 10X10 section out. replaced the pump then too JB weld to reinstall the square that I drilled out. worked fine and of man was that so much easier then dropping that axle.

Yes. He cut the hole in the floor. He is going to finish it off with a nice access door so he will have easy access from now on.

Awesome!

I wanted to do that as well but didn't have the balls to go through with it.

Duranged<----- Give us a direct pic of where you have to cut as best as you can. Maybe with a measuring tape or something would ya?
