Default Dash Air Flow Problem

Just today my Durango has started only blowing out air to the floor or the windshield (defroster). I barely feel any air come out when I switch it to blow out from the front dash vents. I can hear the blower working just fine and it blows out fine everywhere else.

When I used to turn on the defroster I could feel a little bit of air come out of the front vents but that didn't bother me. I'm guessing the problem is related. Any ideas?

sounds to me like you lost vacume to the control system for the air direction, check the vac hose going through the firewall for cracks, if not your going to have to tear into the dash looking for the leak (or jammed door)

Look for a post on an 03 durango with the air coming out the defrost only..
I have an 02 SLT that is stuck on defrost and all my hoses looked good. The above post describes a malfunctioning blend door which is my problem.

The doors on the Durango are run by actuator motors, not vacumn. There is a cam wheel setup that runs the dash and defrost doors off the same motor. The links in the cam usually derail so the doors won't change position. It is right above the gas pedal so you can watch it while you try to get it to move.

the controls in the dash are vacum activated at least in the 1st gen models, quite a few guys have had their dash apart to confirm that this is how the positioning is selected, and they are designed so that when you lose vacume they switch to defrost as there are times where you just NEED to have defrost and the rest of the settings are just for comfort
