Oh NO!!! Transfer Case, Tranny or???
OK, so the other day my daughter was driving when "all of a sudden" my Durango wouldn't go into reverse...funny "all of a sudden" would probably have occurred going forward...anyway. She drove it home and explained that she put it into reverse and it made a screeching sound. I put it into reverse and got the very definate thud of it switching into reverse but no movement. I gave it just a few RPM's and it creeped a couple of inches then I got a loud metallic sound.
It goes forward just fine...of course, the powertrain warranty just expired.
Tranny, transfer case or...ideas???

what engine and trans do you have, what year is your truck and how many miles on it???
sounds to me like you will be rebuilding your transmission the 42 and 44 re transmission (and the 46 too given poor enough maintenance) tend to go bad and for some reason reverse tends to be the first to go . . .)

I'll toss this out as I just finished fixing a full size that had a somewhat similar issue.
The pinion nut had worked loose allowing the pinion gear to be pulled in far enough to stop the truck from moving more than a few inches in reverse but would drive forward with no real issue, though I imagine it had a hell of a vibration if driven at any speed.
The cut of the gear forced the pinion to proper position forward & sucked it into the housing till it contacted the carrier binding the rear end in reverse.
My customer swears his diff has never been apart & his truck though a 99 has only about seventy k.
It was so close to what you described I figured I share.

he was lucky though, only some minor dings & chips on the pinion & carier. customer elected to have me dress those rather than replace & all is well at this time.
