Default 2000 4.7L Oil Capacity

It's my understanding that the 4.7L Durango holds 6 quarts of oil but mine reads full at 5. I've also heard that there was a dipstick issue on some Durango's where they did not give the proper reading. Does anyone have info on this? I want to be sure that I'm adding the proper amount of oil. I put in six and it reads well over the full mark.

Don't overfill! It can cause the oil to foam, and you will lose all your protection. I would put in the 5 quarts to get it on the full mark.

What does it say in your manual? Cause I know my dads 4.7 takes 6 quarts, and that is what it says in the manual.

mine is the same way. if i add 6 it will show on the dipstick as being at least a half quart over. so i start with 5qts and usually end up using 5 1/2 total. my assumption is that there is still oil left after the change? altho mine always looks clean as a whistle after the change. if you find any info about the dipstick issue i would definately like to hear whats up.

the 4.7 is rated at 6 quarts capacity with the filter on, when you first fill the oil back up after draining and changing the filter the filter is EMPTY!!!!!!! so put the 5 in, and then check it, and make the pan full, start the truck and let it idle until the lifters quiet down, then shut it down and check the oil and top off as needed, otherwise you will be low on oil as the filter needs to fill up.
