Nice this makes me feel like I can do it myself. My 99 has 159,000 miles on it and we have been without 2nd gear for about 5 years. I have researching and it always ends up costing almost as much as a rebuilt. This way I would know it is done right!

Okay, so my 1998 Durango with the 318 Magnum (which I have owned since new) now has 266,000 miles on it and has finally started to give me some issues. (You won't hear me complaining!) But, I figure a transmission overhaul is in the future and I am trying to figure out exactly which one I have. The VIN indicates 4RE (not 44RE or 46RE, just 4RE). That is not helpful. The Transmission Part Number is PK52116513AB 3240 2239, which seems to clearly indicate at 46RE. Here is where it gets confusing. There is nowhere that I can find that says a 46RE was ever paired with a 318 (5.2L). If I look at the tranny pan, it does not have the shape of a A518, but instead a A500. Can anyone sort this madness out?

If the pan is shaped like the A500/904 you've got a 44RE which is what's normally behind the 5.2/318.

Thanks for the quick response!

Hmmm... So, the Transmission Part Number PK52116513AB 3240 2239 is incorrect in the reference materials?
