Default PCM Replacement Question

So my 2001 Dodge Durango SLT 5.9L AWD has had a code p0601 PCM Checksum error for almost 2 years now. E-check is around the corner and I would like to keep driving it I purchased a used PCM from ebay but when I install it in my truck the CEL goes off but the theft light takes its place and will not run for more then 5 seconds. I took it to the dealer today thinking they could reprogram it for me but they told me I needed to buy a new PCM for $1800. What I don't understand is why they need to buy a new one and reprogram it when they could just reprogram the replacement I already have. I've spoken with someone at SIA Electronics who specialize in PCM repairs and they told me that they would be able to reprogram the replacement I have as long as there are no issues with it and I provide the VIN and serial of my old pcm. Question is I don't know what to think and will not pay anymore then $300 to fix this as the car was only $1500 to begin with. I'd honestly rather scrap it at that point.
