Default I Need Intrepid Advice! HELP H

So i just purchased a beautiful 93 Intrepid. It has 150,000 miles on it. I was on the road about a month ago when it started making a weird noise when i pressed the gas and then started smoking. Bottom line, a mechanic says i need a transmission and some engine parts or something. I think i can get it fixed for like 12-1300 b/c i know someone, etc. DO YOU THINK IT'S WORTH IT ON THIS CAR? Can somethign else easily go wrong? I'm so sad b/c i literally had the car for a month when this happened, and I've been carless ever since! Please offer your advice. I am so frustrated and confused. Thanks! - Jen, hopeless in NYC

Is it possible for you to get a second mechanic to take a look at it? From a different facility? Did you take it to a local ma and pa place... or a certified dealer? When you press the gas, did it still give power to the wheels and go forward... or no? Was the sound from below you or ahead of you...?

That's a lot of miles... but if the car has been taken care of, and you're taking care of it now (oil changes, tranmission flushes, etc) and you love the car, do it... but I would get a second opinion...

Have the entire car checked over by a good mechanic and see what they come up with, because there is lots of stuff that can start to fail after 150K miles. If they tell you your going to need this and that soon, yhen your better off with another car. However if they say it looks to be good and sound(with the exception of whats wrong with it right now), just get it fixed and enjoy.
