can you or someone you know check your fuel pressure?
just some personal exp - when my car did this same thing the ground wire coming off of the fuel pump had partially corroded and finally broke off all together. it took a long time to figure out.
my car is a little different than yours cuz its a 99 and an mtx. but fuel pressure is still something to check off the list of possibilities

never thought about fuel cause i can drive it all day in the city and never have a problem but tune up was about five yrs ago but i only put three to four thousand miles a yr on it but i get off the highway and when it dies the only thing to get it back running right is put it in nuetral and crank it to four thousand rpms for a sec and some time it takes a few times for that i will check the fuel any one got more ideas

tps should throw a cel. i just dealt with a bad one of those too. my car idled just fine, but if you pulled out right away and didnt let it "warm up" a little it would miss, sputter, and carry on while you accelerated.
really sounds like you arent getting enough fuel at idle to me. my car acted exactly the same. i tore it down to reset the timing in -5 degree weather and everything before i decided maybe it was my pump.
i got underneath the car, saw that damn ground wire. replaced it and the car fired up after three seconds of cranking to build fuel pressure.
