Default code 54 and question

can someone break down the cam sensor fail in relation to the pcm/ecm and how it knows to keep running with a 54 code. almost all my experience is pre 1980, I don't guess that I fully understand the obd2 so well. thanks in advance, postcar.

54 is not a valid OBD2 code.
