I had my heads rebuilt, replaced the 2 bbl carb that had already been rebuilt twice and replaced the water pump...I am now getting 5 mpg LESS than I did. I have no idea what is going on. The heads are the same ones, just rebuilt due to the dried out valve seals.
8.5 mpg sucks.
check the timing and valve lash. And check to see if the new carb is jetted exactly the same as the old one.
On my 87 D100 I get 10 city 12 highway, and thats not pushing the truck very hard at all. Its all stock. 318 and 3-speed auto. 83 thousand orig. miles.

i got to say if it has a 1 bbl carb then someone has replace the carb or you are assuming it is a 1 bbl carb. i think the only engine to run a 1 bbl carb was the slant 6
