Default 318 power?

just woundering if everyones 318 is the same..by that i mean very little power.my truck has trouble spining its tires on a gravel road and absolutly no chance of spining them on pavement.its stock and only running 31's so no big changes since new.its also an 88 by the way

the fact that you have 31's on your truck is probably the reason you can't spin your tires and it seems so gutless.

3.92 gears and 32" tires have no trouble spinning for me. My engine is stock. Intake and exhaust can't be giving me more than a handful of hp/tq over stock. And mine is an 89. Its not a speed demon, but grunt is something it does have.

My truck will fry on dry pavement with a 318 and 31" mud terrains. Ive only spun it intentionaly, once tho. As for gravel, it spins easy. Maybe yours just needs a tuneup.

I would check the timing. Mine was so far off that it did what you describe. Now that the timing is in check, it has already spun unintentionally a few times on gravel and haven't tried on pavement and I don't plan on it. I also have 31's and I'd like to keep as much life in them as possible. The SRT-4 is my fun toy.

84 D250
3:55 D60 open diff
318 with Edelbrock TM5 intake and 1406 carb
727
Stock y-pipe to Flowmaster with dumps
31x10.5x16.5 tires

Not only can I not spin tires even in the rain... the truck is scary to try to pull into traffic with. I know the intake I have doesn't help. This is why I have a cammed 318 ready to drop in with some nice longtube headers!

Mine runs pretty good. It's no big block, though. My only fear about pulling out in front of traffic is frying the one rear tire that spins. And I run the a/c 90% of the time, which takes a couple horses out of it too. My dad has some old LA heads off a '69 318 along with intake, manifolds, etc. that I make look into doctoring up a little and getting rid of tbi. But for now, it's 100% stock and runs too good to want to mess with.
