It's a 400.
lol
The 440 is a taller engine and the small blocks (ie, 318, 360) have the distributor on the back, but the big blocks have it on the front. That's the easiest way to tell.
see my stupid questions make me learn haha thank you very much dodge dude when i pick it up on sat sun or monday im sure ill be askingmore stupid questions
I had found a site a while back describing the differences and benefits of the 400 vs the 440, but I lost it.
I would love to see that although, I am going to put my 383 in my truck SOMEDAY. I guess I will have to either move out of this county...technically that is! Or wait forever till they grandfather in the law where I never need smog again.

I'd have to do more googling. The site also sold 400 stroker kits, and 440 stroker kits.
The 400 block is actually a stouter block than the 440. Pretty cool.
And will your 383 not pass smog? You could make it run lean.

It's a 383 Magnum out of I THINK a 1969 Road Runner. Has about 35K original miles on it. I'm not sure about the smog rules but I AM sure it would fail visual. The good thing is, I can register it at a buddies house about 10 miles away and never have to pass smog. Although, I also have a 72 Duster just aching to have that big badass motor in it.

Tell me about bro! Otherwise I would have the 383 IN the truck! I have a 74 Chev that I could put a friggin space shuttle motor in because it is exempt....

stupid question were can i verify on the motor that it is indeed a 400? just cause i was googling them and they seem bigger then whats in there and ive seen some 360's that look identical to what this is.. but then again im looking at the motor cramed into a charger lol not a huge roomed pickup ?
yeah, easy, both the mid block like the 383 and 400 are in a sense big blocks, but the real big blocks like the 413, 426 wedge and 440 are all big blocks. All from 383 thru 440 have the dizzy in the front, all small blocks have it center of the back almost hidden by the carb or TBI.
