So ive been putting my rear brakes off forever. Had another thread going for awhile but I have a few more questions. Ive been doing some research on the rear brakes and particularly to find the rear bearing nut tool. Started to change the brakes a couple weeks ago but didnt have the right tools. One thing Ive read in a few places is to not remove the nyloc nuts or the wedges. Ive heard the nyloc nuts will wear out. As for the wedges, I dont even know what they are. So i was hoping to get some clarity on the wether I should replace the nuts and the wedges and what exactly the wedge is.

 

The nyloc nuts are a 1 time use nut. The wedge usually comes with the new nuts but can be used over. It is a small sheet metal piece that you tap into the keyway once the nut is properly torqued.

I replaced them when I installed my rear disk brakes with Stage 8 spindle nuts.

Got another question, Im looking to order the special tool for the spindle nuts and Im finding two different sockets. Im told its a 2 9/16 in. But one of the sockets looks just like a big socket and the other has "teeth" protruding from the body of the socket. So if the tool a true socket or something different with the teeth?

 

The one with the teeth is normally for the front spindle nuts but not all. 2 9/16 sounds right but I would have to check, I have a number of them of different sizes.

 

BIG hint: DO use anti-seize compound an ALL threads, on the bottom of the truck. not a lot just coat them. the brake line tubing fitting for sure. after 80,000 miles you will be glad you did. on exhaust system do NOT use cad plated bolts. the plating will come off and jam the threads. and use the right size bolt on the exhaust system. on a slant 6 i used a 3/8 bolt it kept getting loose. i figured out it was made to have a 7/16" bolt.
