Default 4-Speed Automatic

Hi guys. I just bought myself a 1993 Dodge D150 earlier today, and I just had a couple quick questions about the transmission. Is the 4-Speed Torqueflite Automatic just a computer driven 727 with overdrive? Also, are these 4-speeds proven reliable? Thank you.

Yes. Your transmission is comparable to a torqueflite 727 or 904 with an added overdrive unit.

Let's just say that these were some of the transmissions that gave dodge the "bad trannies" reputation. However, if your truck is fine now, just keep taking care of it, and it should be ok. It seems like a lot of units failed early, and the rest were perfectly normal and strong. If yours is still going strong, it shouldn't give you any more issues than any other automatic. My truck is one of the ones that had an early failure of it's a518 transmission, which was replaced by a 727.

Ahh, okay. I thought this was the case, thank you. I guess I'll be beefing my tranny up somewhere down the line. I had plans to knock the old 318 out to a 390 stroker.

The original A518 in my truck lasted about 230K miles, when the previous owner rebuilt it. The rebuilt one had about 22K on it when I pulled it for my manual swap.

Not bad at all. I have high hopes for this thing. It shifts like new at the moment. This is probably one of the nicest older vehicles I have ever purchased.

Check out the 2nd gen forum FAQ's section for all kinds of info on the transmission thats in that truck.
Also there's a sticky called "Montec's transmission corner", check it out for good info on keeping it alive.
