Default burning oil, big problem or small?

I have not been much of a truck person, but I'm in need of one and I found an 88 pretty cheap on CL the post says it runs good but burns a little oil. the truck itself is 900 which is right in my budget. What COULD be the problem and is it a DIY fix? I'm decently handy but haven't worked on many cars.

I realize that this is a vague question and there could be a million different answers from small to it's screwed. but I'm really just looking for an estimate on whether or not to get it and fix it or keep looking.

I actually have my eye on an 86 ram as well add says it runs good but no other details...
These old dodges are in my price range and honestly I like the style as well. so I'm pretty interested in buying one.

thanks for any advice

could be valve guides, piston rings, if its less than a quart a month I would worry about it...mine burns about a quart a month and also leaks about the same amount out of the rear main seal

I realize that a $900 truck is going to have problems but I don't want a "replace the engine" problem I'm ok with replace some seals maybe spend a couple hundred on fixing it so its every day drive able problem.

I mean I realize my budget is low but I'm buying a truck because I'm buying an abandoned house...

I'm ok with beaters and fixer uppers... I just want something that I can buy and drive around until I can get to a fix.

It could be a variety of things, most of which will only result in poor emissions, carbon build-up oil consumption, and a James Bond style smokescreen in the mornings.

On the other hand, if it's dripping black gold out of the tailpipe, its probably not going to run very well. There is blow-by, which is usually acceptable . . . and then there's blown up.

to be honest... the 86 is the one I WANT. It l looks just like my gradndpa's... but it's listed as 1500 and I only have $1000.. but, I'd buy the one in the best shape.
