Converting W350 to lockout hubs?
Looking around tonight, I came across a couple of posts from another forum, where they seem to think that its pretty easy to convert the CAD axle to accept manual hubs. Here is a quote or two found on "SteelSoldiers": (Better give credit where its due)
"All the '80-93 dodge axles i have found at my local pick and pull have been the cad front axles with the silver caps instead of lock outs. Can those hubs be easily converted to lock outs?"

Response:
"If they have the large silver caps that pop off, yes, they are easy to swap. just remove the silver cap, push inward on the splined drive ring, and remove the large circlip, and the small one around the end of the axle shaft. The splined drive ring will pop out. If the grease is old and dry you might have to spray it to get it to pop out. Then just install the manual locking hubs."
Response 2:
"Agreed, CAD axles are great to swipe parts from as few people want them for anything else. The manual hub fit exactly as NHdiesel explained it. Pop off the cap, take out the splined puck and pick up a set of Warn Premiums (Warn part number 20990) and you are set."
Do you guys agree, or is this too good to be true?

I know there are a few ways to deal with the 2 piece axleshaft. One of which is simply (and cheaply) to reverse the range fork in the CAD actuator so that the connecting collar is always linking the two sides. Another is the Perma-lok, or similar product that permanently connects the two axle shafts for under $100. My biggest concern is if the hubs themselves will bolt on, as easily as the guys from the other forum stated. It seems I have an 8 lug Dana 44. (3500 lb axle)

Well, I went and read the entire thread that you posted above. It seems like a straightforward swap in the way they explained it, and I haven't found any information to the contrary, so...it sounds good.
Personally, I have no experience with the full-time Dodge D44s. I've heard things about problems swapping the split axleshaft for a solid one, regarding a bearing or seal on the split side, but since you're not doing that, it's not a worry.
Once you deal with the CAD axle, I guess you just have to worry about your TC, if you already don't have some part-time unit ready to go.

That's what I thought as well. My t-case is already a true part-time unit, so I should be good. Hopefully, if I do this, I experience the same mileage increases others are bragging about. I would be very pleased with an extra 1-2 mpg's, not to mention the added durability, reduced wear, more reliability.

Well... Ordered them. A new set of Warn Premiums. part #20990. Funny thing about it. My truck is definitely a 1 ton, but it has a dana 44 front with 19 spline axle shafts. Same as the 3/4 ton. Supposedly, one tons only came with 30 spline axle shafts up front. I guess we will know in a few days if they work or not!

Thanks. Will do. For anyone interested in doing the same, I found the set of Warn Standard hubs (part #9790) for about $96 shipping included, almost bought them, then stumbled on a set of Warn Premiums (part #20990) for only $10 more. No brainer. Anyway. Here is the link if anyone is in the market for hubs. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Warn-Set-of-2-Locking-Hub-New-Chevy-Full-Size-Truck-Suburban-GMC-20990-/370908891394?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item565be48902&vxp=mtr

Didn't you say in the past your axles and other driveline parts were from an 85 here: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...questions.html
I've been trying to figure out what's going on since these hubs would not fit on a 78 dodge axle and a 78 would never have had CAD.
What transfer case do you have?
