Default What transmission do I use?

I need a transmission for a 318. The engine will have some minor performance work done to it, (cam, intake, 750 carb headers) whether that effects transmission choice I do not know. I know very little about transmissions and what would be the best match for this engine. I'm building this as a street truck but with enough extra punch to have some fun. The the truck (1990 D150) I'm putting this in came stock with a 3.9 v6 and 32Rh transmission, still have the tranny. What's best?

Keep in mind everything needs to work together. Where do you want the power band to be? You need to know this before picking parts. You don't want a open single stage intake if you plan on towing. Choosing the wrong parts will hurt performance rather than improve it.

I noticed you have several posts refering to the same vehicle. It would be better to leave it to one post so everybody knows the "big picture" as to performance mods. From what i have seen from the other threads you are going with a carb. If it where me i would get 360 and build that. The 318 and 360 are basically the same motor except different bore and stroke(they use the same parts). As i said in one of the other post you need to know where you want the power band to be before buying parts.

This truck won't be for towing. Weekend warrior kind of thing.
I've always preferred a 318, always been told they were the best engine Chrysler made. But then again a 360 parts and prices are about the same I'm assuming. Say I put a 360. What transmission would work best performance wise? 3 speed 4 speed 5 speed?

The bolt pattern for the 318-360 are the same. Your truck was in the conversion years (89-90)going from the 3 speed 727 to the optional A500 4speed overdrive unit. I assume you didn't have overdrive so a 727 will work fine. You could use the od trans but with a few mods.

Thank you for the help. 318 with edelbrock intake 750 carb, headers, mild can, 727 transmission, and 3.55 rear end sound like a nice street/hot rod package?

Do you have any tips on breaking in the cam? I know that I need to use zinc oil for break in with assembly lube. I'm also reacing the springs as well, the comp cams told me I needed to so the cam and springs are on their way. I just want to make sure I do this right and not destroy the cam/ engine. Engine is also a crate engine if that effects anything
