Transmission Replacement

I have a 1993 W250 with a dead transmission, I can get a rebuilt transmission delivered to me for about $700. The shops around here want about $1600+ to rebuild my current one, that includes removal and installation once rebuilt. Looking to save a couple of bucks and was wondering how difficult it would be to remove the old one and put in the new one myself. I consider myself average mechanically. What are your thoughts? Does anyone have "step by step" instructions?

A transmission replacement has always been a diy for me especially on a truck. (and when I say diy i really mean dibm - "do it by myself") I never used a manual but the common haynes version should do the trick. I think that's the first thing you should buy when you get a new vehicle anyway.

Well, I spent part of my long Thanksgiving weekend under the truck in my garage pulling stuff off to get to the transmission. I basically have just a couple things left to do and was looking for some help. All the wires going to the transmission, is there a main plug that I can undo to disconnect them all at once if not, is there a trick to removing them. Also the linkage seems a little tricky help there would be appreciated too.

So far, exhaust Y-pipe off, just unplugged the O2 sensor and left it on the Y-pipe. Transfer case off, needs service also. Drive shafts off, starter off, torque converter cover off and torque converter unbolted. All bolts holding tranny to engine have been loosened, but not off yet. Tranny drained and pan put back on and coolant lines disconnected at the tranny. Cross brace still needs to come off then I think just the tranny.

Look behind the right head and see if there's a plug for the trans harness. The linkages should just pry out. Squirt some WD-40 on the rubber grommets and pop 'em out with a screwdriver.
Before installing the new trans,pull the flex plate and line up the holes on the converter bolts as they'll only match up one way. Shoot a little paint on the plate/converter to mark one hole. Also BE CERTAIN the tranny cooler/lines are clean. Flush it good or all the trash from the burnt trans will go right in the govener and valve body. Instant pain in the ass.
When it's all buttoned up be sure to check/adjust the kick down linkage. Linkage at full travel @ wide open throttle.
BTW where'd you get a trans for $700 ? My Dakota's fried. Sounds like the zizz cog came loose from the latch ratchet lol. Grenaded a planetary.
