good suggestions all. ive seen used but usable edelbrock 600s for under 100 bucks. probably not much use to go any bigger than that though.

Another option is to keep checking kijiji and craigslist for someone looking to sell a built or partially built motor. theres usually something every month or so.

but it can be a risk. i really wanted to buy one not so long ago but i couldnt see it running so i didnt buy it.

i disagree with ditching the 2 bbl carb. the 2 bbl carb is perfect for what he needs but like i said before i do believe he needs an RV cam.

Well guys, I have decided to go with a new dual plane intake, new 1604 carb, new dist., plugs and wires, and lose both cats. When I did comp. test I had 140 on all 8. That being said, I chose to leave the bottom alone. I will freshen the top, but not too much, and lose those cats, and see how it does. I will use these new parts anyway if I do a total rebuild later. When I do this I will also adjust tappets and put in new valve guide seals. If this improves the engine enough for my taste, I will leave it alone for awhile. Also save a little dough for something else. What do you think?

i still think adding cheap (150 dollar) exhaust headers would do a lot. New heads would be good but i understand that the work and money start adding up. But you can only dump so much gas into it before you gotta open up the other end. just something to keep in mind

Well, I finished my upgrades. New Edelbrock performer intake, new 1604 carb, dist., cap, plugs, wires, rotor. Also, new hoses and thermostat. Yanked off numerous hoses. Lost cats, new muffler. Air pump gone. It is definitely better truck now. Almost fun to drive, feels like I picked up 30 HP. From 35 to 60 MPH is the most improvement. Have not pulled yard trailer yet but look forward to it. In granny low, it is hard to let the clutch out in gravel without it spinning a little and my rear end is locked. So, I am pleased to say the least. Spent 750.00, but everything is new.

I also agree with nemesis.
A set of jegs headers are a good value(about $110)and worth the effort.
