Default What is the life expectancy of a Hemi?

Just bought a 04 2500 with a hemi, it has 115k with a slight case of the notorious hemi tick. Otherwise the truck is solid and I hope to get at least 150k out of it. The transmission shifts smooth but people tell me there issues with them as well and can expect to replace it soon. I do plan to pull a 5000 lb travel trailer about 2000 miles per year. If anybody had issues and at what mileage would be appreciated.

I personally know a lot of guys with Hemis with 150k plus on them and I can think of one with over 200k. It's only been out since '03, so it'd be a bit harder to find a lot with 200k plus miles on them.
Given their record with truck motors, I've seen 318s (5.2), 360s (5.9) with well over 300k miles on them and some 4.7s with well over 200k miles on them. It's a safe bet that with decent care, you could expect 200k miles out of a Hemi.

That said, I have a favorite saying: Dodge trucks: best engines on the planet, matched with the worst transmissions!!!

Laughing about the best engine on the planet. My dad has always wanted to put a Dodge Cummins with a GM Allison Transmission in his F-250.

Yeah, someone is gonna figure out how to make a bolt on kit for that combo and make a million! Right now I understand it takes a whole bunch of fabricating to get an Allison tranny mated to a CTD...

If you take care of it, I dare say it will last at least 200K. My favorite experience is this: my uncle had a 73 Suburban with a 350 4bbl for a work truck. It hauled a helluva lot of weight all over the place, but he was religious with maintenance and fluid changes. The body fell apart (northeast) around the frame and drivetrain at over 300K.

It's all about how it's taken care of. The more preventative maintenance and better care you provide, the less problems will occur. Major problems such as head gasket failure, over heating..etc all put stress on the engine and reduce the life expectancy, so doing your best to prevent those situations will result in a long lifed engine.

200-300kmi should be within reason. I wouldn't think twice about a super clean vehicle that had nearly 200kmi on it if it was a good buy, cuz i know that I'd do all the maintenance to keep it going strong. I'd say once you hit 120kmi on a truck, mileage don't matter after that. It's more on how clean the vehicle is at that point.
