Default How do you change the oil pan gasket?

So I took my oil pan off as it seemed to be dripping a little oil around the gasket. I got it off fine, put a new gasket on it, and went to put it back on. This is where I ran into problems. On the transmission side, I can't get it to go back on. It's one of the pieces of the motor that makes it a really tight fit between it and the transmission. Anyone done this before? How the hell do you get it off? I swear everything on this truck is designed the ****tiest way possible. I hate this damn truck, but none the less I need to get it back on the road so I can at least drive it.

I read that, but other than him saying it was difficult for him to get the oil pan on, it doesn't really have any other tips.

If you do a search here, you will find some threads that suggest putting some string or fish line through the bolts holes to line it up. Wish I could find that or those threads for you. Sorry.

It's that it won't go on on the side near the transmission though, not that I'm really having trouble getting the bolt holes to line up. Any tips for this?

just throwing this out there...maybe you can get a ratchet strap to the front of motor and pull it forward a little so it makes a little more room?i know they are bolted together, but maybe there will be a litle bit of flex that will allow you to get it in.

i had to remove my starter and flex plate (edit...inspection cover) to get my oil pan off in the first place. i tried to remove it without removing the flex plate, but i couldn't get it to unhook from the flex plate lip.

did you remove your flex plate (inspection cover), or did you get it off w/o that ?

I didn't remove the flex plate or the starter. How do you remove the flex plate? Do you have to split the transmission from the motor to do that? I think if I had that removed I could get it back on.

remove 2 angle braces between block and trans.
disconnect battery. very important.
unbolt the f@#$King starter. 1 bolt, 1 nut on stud. very tight.
drop starter down on your chest.
remove big wire from starter.
unplug small wire from starter.
unbolt a few small bolts from flexplate inspection cover.
cover will come off, but you have to sort of bend it over the starter stud.

yupper, oil pan wont come out unless you remove starter, inspection cover and the 2 cross braces.remember to disconnect battery before you weld a wrench to the starter.
