I need to do a distributor cap (brass terminals), rotor, wire set, and plug tune up. Summit racing has a kit with 8mm wires, rotor, cap for about 45.00. Is the summit racing brand good?

The cap, rotor and wire set looks very good to me, but I have never used any Summit parts. If they are 8mm wires they will help get a little more voltage to the plugs. The wires look like they are good quality but it's hard to tell from a picture. The cap and rotor look great, the brass contacts last longer and will also provide more volts to the plugs and that will get you a better spark from the plugs, all of which may help your truck run better. I like the fact that they include the wire separators with the set, but you should get a bigger tube of dielectric grease. That tube in the pic does not look like it contains enough for all the wires on both ends.

The NGK plug looks good. I ran a set of NGK's in my Dakota before, they did well, no problems at all with them. The ones in your pic are the NGK FR5 plugs and I think those are one heat range colder than the factory plugs. If so then they are about the same as the Autolite 3923 that a lot of us here use. It might be the FR5 is factory heat range and the FR6 is one range colder. Now that I am thinking about it I seem to remember with NGK the higher the part number, the lower the heat range it is. You can call NGK to check for sure on the heat range. Either plug will work fine. Going one heat range colder will help reduce preignition and pinging problems if you have any. Be sure to use anti-sieze on the new plugs.

The Summit parts and NGK plugs look like they will work very well and last a long time. The wire set looks to be as good or better than most premium sets you can get at Napa, etc. As long as the price is right, you are probably making the best choice with those parts.

I have a hard time buying cheap autolite and champion plugs. I have used high end bosch my whole life. I just think autolite and champion are crap. Everyone here says i shouldnt use platnium plugs especially bosch + 4

 

Dodge engineers did a study some years ago and found that the magnum engines perform best with a plain copper core, single electrode plug. There is no need for platinum plugs in a 3.9. And for some reason, the Bosch plugs and O2 sensors just don't work very well with a 3.9.

It is quite good I have the whole set on my 1999 dakota 3.9 mag. I even got the accel coil and adapter wire with the set and it runs fine.

 

I too have been looking at this kit for a while... how is this kit overall? did any one have any fitmit issues / are the plug wires numbered? did you feel a difference with this kit and the accel upgraded coil, on the 3.9L?

 

Well I cant tell you about "feeling" a difference but the I got the summit racing rotor, cap, wires, and NKG V power plugs installed in less the 20 min for all so I would say the fit was excellent. The cap is numbered "1" just like the OEM for first firing position and everything else is pretty self explanatory unless your a dumbass.
