Default What Does A Camshaft Position Sensor Do?

I have a 98 Dodge Dakota 3.9 V-6 and it's not firing nor does the Auto Shutdown Replay kick in. I have tried other replays still not working.

My question is does the Camshaft Position Sensor have anything to do with the Auto Shutdown Relay?

The camshaft position sensor and the crankshaft position sensor both help the pcm establish the rotational position and speed of the engine. The camshaft position sensor helps the pcm determine when to inject fuel to each cylinder and the ignition timing.

If there is no signal from either the Crank PS or the Cam PS it will shut down the ASD relay.

Have you checked for codes?

OK whats going on, I called 2 Auto Part Stores and both told me that my 98 Dodge Dakota with a 3.9L V6 SFI engine didn't have a Camshaft Position Sensor, but I took it out today and cleaned it just to see if it would make a difference, which it didn't. It sits under the Dist Cap with a 3 wire plug in.

Can someone please help...

The crank shaft position sensor senses where the crank shaft position is. When you first turn on the key, the ASD relay come on for a couple seconds, if it doesn't then the problem is not the crank sensor or any other sensor.

Thank you for your reply, so what would make the relay not to come on and work? I have checked fuses, changed relays and nothing works.

Thanks

Thanks 00DakDan for your reply, so if the Crank and/or the Cam Senors are bad then the Auto Shutdown Relay won't work and will not produce spark "Firing"?

Like 22Dodge22 said, the ASD relay should come on for a few seconds. If the pcm doesn't receive a signal from either sensor it will shut down the ASD.

Can you pull any codes?

cam position sensor is listed in parts stores as "pickup coil" or "secondary pickup coil". its inside the distributor cap, down at the bottom. looks like this on a V8

Thanks dhvaughan for the info, I found it on Autozones website, but had another question.

The Pickup Coil "Camshaft Pos Sensor on the website said it was for a 1998 Dodge Truck Dakota 2WD 3.9L MFI 6cyl but when I ran the VIN to check what motor was in it it said 1998 Dodge Truck Dakota 2WD 3.9L SFI 6cyl.

So my question is, are there any difference in the MFI and the SFI or will the part still work?

Thanks
